Purpose of the MGIA Annual Environmental Improvement Awards
The aim of the Michigan Green Industry Association Environmental Improvement Awards Program is as follows:
1. To increase public awareness and reflect MGIA’s commitment to environmental improvement through quality landscaping.
2. To recognize and encourage the landscape professional who executes superior landscaping through the use of quality materials, design, and workmanship.
3. To recognize the consumers. We invite ALL contractors regardless of membership status to submit their work for award consideration.
Presentation of Awards
The recipients will be recognized with the presentation of plaques at MGIA’s Annual Environmental Improvement Awards Program Banquet and Holiday Celebration in December.

The Michigan Green Industry Association (MGIA) held its annual Awards Banquet and Holiday Celebration on December 7, 2007, at the Fairlane Club in Dearborn. Over 175 members and guests attended this prestigious event, designed to recognize the “best of the best” for excellence in landscape design, construction and maintenance, including hardscapes, irrigation, lighting and water features.
Associate Art Director, Cariann Nowak and Art Director, Michelle Melton created a beautiful video presentation, narrated by Rick Lazzell that showcased the talents of the award-winning companies. There were 78 entries this year, all judged by a distinguished panel of industry experts in each field. Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards were presented by Dan Weingartz, MGIA Chairman of the Board. Past Chairman of the Board, Jim Berns presented certificates to the members who completed the Certified Landscape Technician Exam in September.
The Member of the Year Award was given to Jeremy Christianson of Michigan Landscape Design. This award is given to the individual or company who has worked unselfishly for the benefit of the Association, its members, and the Association’s influence in the greater community.
The Chairman’s Award was presented to Lillian Dean, S.E. Oakland County Water Authority and the Supplier Partner Award was given to Mike Tandeski, Tandeski Associates.
Many guests took home gifts, including gift certificates to many of Detroit’s finest restaurants, including the Whitney, Morton’s of Chicago and others. This year the $500 shopping spree, donated by Mike and Nancy Tandeski went to Leslie Lindbloom of the Lochmoor Club in Grosse Pointe Woods. The grand prize . . . a trip for two to Madrid, Spain was won by Mark Rueter of United Lawnscape.
These gifts were made possible by the generous donations from the member companies recognized on the following page. A special thank you to all of them and to all of the wonderful industry people who made the evening such a success. Congratulations to all of the award winners for their fine work.
