The Landscape Industry Certified Program is recognized throughout the United States and Canada as the premier hands-on certification designed specifically for the landscape industry. A Landscape Industry Certified Technician is a landscape professional who has been certified through an international “hands-on” testing program developed by PLANET and licensed to the Michigan Green Industry Association (MGIA) to administer in the state of Michigan. Landscape contractors, supervisors, foremen and field technicians who are Landscape Industry Certified Technicians are recognized internationally as qualified professionals. This program promotes not only professionalism but education, training and a high standard of quality. These are principles the MGIA has always endorsed.

TESTING PROCEDURES
The certification test for technicians is a full-day event. There are 5 designations to choose from:

• Softscape Installation
• Hardscape Installation
• Turf Maintenance
• Ornamental Maintenance
• Irrigation

The applicant selects a specialty designation and takes a series of written and hands-on test problems. Each problem has a time limit set for its completion. During the hands-on testing, the candidate is judged on work methods for adherence to best practices and safety ideals. Applicants must pass every problem in a designation to become certified. It is recommended, but not required that candidates have at least one year work experience before taking the test. Candidates may retest the problems needed at any state's test. Additional designations can be taken at future test dates. Observers attend each test to assure the program is administered consistently across North America.

PREPARING FOR THE TEST
Study Manuals are available in three subject areas (Installation, Maintenance, and Irrigation) in both English and Spanish. To order, mark the quantity needed on the  registration form (See link above) and include payment, call the MGIA at (248) 646-4992 or email tiffany@landscape.org. The name change did not cause the study guides to change, so if you have purchased one in the last 3 to 5 years, there is no need to do so again.

RECERTIFICATION
Your certification is maintained in an international registry by PLANET.  To maintain your certification, recertification is required every two years by reporting CEUs directly to PLANET.  PLANET will send you more information and the reporting forms.
