Principles of Proper Grading, Drainage & Planting Techniques

Friday, March 23, 2018 (9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.)

A.M Session Speaker: Chuck Elias, Licensed Landscape Architect, Land Design Studio
Many failures in landscape installations are the result of grading or drainage issues, but often times landscape companies lack the knowledge or ability to train their workers to prevent or resolve these issues.  Improper or inadequate drainage can result in poor plant health, damage to hardscapes, water intrusion into buildings, and landscaped areas that are unusable or difficult to maintain. Many projects require reshaping a site to create safe and appropriately graded patios, walkways and other activity areas.  This session will address the following topics related to proper grading and drainage on your landscape projects:
  • Overview of grading and drainage
  • Instruments and tools used in grading and drainage
  • Drainage products and materials
  • Slope calculations
  • Surface drainage design
  • Subsurface drainage design
  • Special considerations next to buildings and other structures
P.M. Session Speaker: Gary Eichen, Plant Health Care/BioTurf Manager, Mike’s Tree Surgeons
In the second half of this class we will cover correct planting techniques and WHY doing it correctly is important. You will also learn about how soil conditions can limit specie selection. Did you know there are 4 environments on EVERY landscape? Learn what they are and how that knowledge can affect planting choices. You will also learn that long-term sustainable landscapes are vital to your business and your company’s reputation.
