Balsam woolly adelgid, Adelges piceae, was introduced to North America in the early 20th century likely arriving on imported nursery stock.  Since that time this invasive insect has killed countless fir trees in the northeast, west, and southeast.  In August of this year balsam woolly adelgid was detected for the first time in Michigan.  Since the pest was first reported the Michigan Department of Agriculture and its partners have been responding to the incident with the goal of identifying the extent of the infestation and eradication.  Robert Miller from the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development will provide background information on balsam woolly adelgid and will outline the steps the state has and will be taking to eradicate balsam woolly adelgid.
