The Tree Doctor’s Diary and Oak Wilt Update for 2023

Thursday, March 23, 2023 (9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.)
Speaker:  Dr. Dave Roberts, The Plant Doctor, LLC

CEUs: 6-MDA (2 or 3B), 6-ISA

The Tree Doctor’s Diary: Being a Tree Doctor can be very challenging. As a Tree Doctor, I am often called into situations that have already been examined by others in our industry. Some of these professionals are tops in their field… or landscape. As the Tree Doctor, I am often asked to confirm the diagnosis and control of specific problem; at other times, professionals and I must work hard to ferret out the clues that will hopefully lead to a successful resolution. It is not uncommon for me to be contacted directly by the property owner; I must confess: The Customer is not always right. To be perfectly frank, as we pursue our daily activities, everyone in our industry is a Plant Doctor as we try to aid our clientele in the planting, maintenance, and care of their landscape. Some of our encounters are of the third kind, some are humorous, and some are downright depressing. Although the central focus of our adventures is plant health care, it can sometimes be surmised that plant owners need more attention than their trees. Tips for diagnosis and management of some of the most perplexing plant problems will be reviewed in Dr. Dave’s adventures in this story-telling-style presentation.
Oak Wilt Update and Research Review: Oak Wilt has become a major problem in Michigan. Unfortunately, Oak Wilt has become a highly controversial issue in our industry as well; controversial aspects have contributed immensely to this invasive disease becoming a major problem. There is abundant misinformation, some of which is being disseminated by supposed reputable sources. The misinformation has resulted in confusion among arborists and the public alike; failures in diagnosis and disease management are not uncommon.  Portions of this segment will be intertwined with The Tree Doctor’s Diary as is appropriate. This segment of the March 23 program will be devoted to correcting/clarifying the misinformation and confusion while providing some important Oak Wilt Research Updates.
