Sponsored By:
Michigan CAT
Keynote Speaker: Rick Darke, Rick Darke LLC
The richness of life in any landscape is linked to the richness of its layers, and this is true for both people and wildlife. Rick Darke will look at landscape layers from ground cover to canopy and will describe how to create and manage them in gardens that are beautiful, biologically diverse, and joyfully livable. The long-term health and durability of gardens is also dependent upon the informed selection of plants suited to local conditions and purpose. This presentation will illustrate the potential of a wide range of plants capable of enlivening layered Midwest landscapes.

Rick Darke, Rick Darke LLC: Rick Darke grounds his work in an observational ethic that blends art, ecology, and cultural geography in the design and stewardship of living landscapes. His collaborative public projects include gardens and parks such as The High Line in New York, The Iron Garden at Carrie Furnaces National Historic Landmark in Pittsburgh, and 21st Century Parks' Moss Gibbs Woodland Garden in Kentucky. He's also worked on residential landscapes in diverse climates and regions including the Midwest, west coast, northeast, southeast and southcentral. Rick’s Pennsylvania home garden, which he and his wife Melinda Zoehrer have created and manage together, has served as their living laboratory for over a quarter century.  Rick’s many books include The American Woodland Garden: Capturing the Spirit of the Deciduous Forest, The Encyclopedia of Grasses for Livable Landscapes, The Living Landscape: Designing for Beauty and Biodiversity in the Home Garden, co-authored with Doug Tallamy, and Gardens of the High Line: Elevating the Nature of Modern Landscapes co-authored with Piet Oudolf. 10:45 am – 11:45 am: "THE MICHIGAN GARDEN"
Sponsored By: Vermeer Midwest
Speakers: Ann Weiland and Julie Sajtar, Hoerr Schaudt Landscape Architects
All gardens reflect the importance of careful planning. When working within the context of Michigan, we pull inspiration from the surrounding areas, the personal taste and objectives of our clients, community influences and the seasonal nature of planting design. Ann Weiland and Julie Sajtar will discuss how these factors combine to further a design process which seeks to generate a landscape design that elicits delight and enjoyment from our clients while being firmly grounded within the context of place.

Ann Weiland, Associate Principal: With over twenty years of experience working in horticulture, Ann has honed an exceptional expertise in creating thoughtful designs where nature and architecture converge. Ann is an Associate Principal at Hoerr Schaudt, and has spent the past five years specializing in planting design with a particular emphasis on perennials. After earning her Bachelor’s degree in Landscape Horticulture from the University of Delaware, she went on to receive her Master’s degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Ann oversees much of the horticulture and planting for Hoerr Schaudt, both on commercial as well as residential projects.

Julie Sajtar, Associate Principal: Heavily influenced by her education in the fine arts, Julie is passionate about creative problem solving. Through her background in painting, she has achieved a high level of understanding in regard to the practical and imaginative solutions needed in landscape architecture. She loves projects that require both research and creativity, and allow clients to think outside the box. In addition to her work at Hoerr Schaudt, Julie teaches Planting Design at the Chicago Botanic Garden’s Regenstein School. A native of Illinois, she ventured to the west coast to pursue a Master of Fine Arts at Claremont Graduate University and returned to earn her Masters in Landscape Architecture from the University of Illinois.

12:00 pm – 1:00 pm: LUNCH

A course-by-course lunch including crisp greens, entree and dessert.

1:15 pm – 2:30 pm: DESIGN SYMPOSIUM PANEL
Sponsored By:
Christensen's Plant & Hardscape Centers
This session involves a panel composed of a designer, a nurseryman, and a Plant Health Care professional, who will share their strategies for dealing with insects/diseases, cultural and planting issues, and offer helpful advice for the landscape designer. Bring your questions and comments, and prepare for an interactive, educational discussion!

2:30 pm – 3:30 pm: OPTIONAL TOUR
On the tour we will see one of the last remaining Jensen landscapes and the newly installed visitor center landscape that features bioswales, native plants and a developing prairie. In the historic landscape we will see Jensen’s vision of a naturalistic landscape, formal rose garden and an expansive great lawn. We will also walk through the fully restored pool and lagoon. This recently completed restoration took over 3 years of research and construction to recreate the historic landscape. The pool was designed to feel like an northern Michigan swimming hole in the woods and the landscape features a diverse mix of native plants, sandstone pavers and a waterfall into the lagoon.
